Won’t someone trick my 3GS so I can Sling over 3G? UPDATE: Someone did!

UPDATE: crash-x has release 3G Unrestrictor to allow wi-fi only apps to run over the 3G network.  Read more here.

So I now have my shiny 3GS safely jailbroken using the Iphone Dev Team’s latest tools, and happily running Intelliscreen and Elert, along with my other favorite JB apps like SBSettings.  But I am missing one of the best hacks from the the OS 2.0 days…Tricker ThreeG and VoipOver3G to allow SlingPlayer on my iPhone 3GS.

Slingbox player for iPhone submitted to App Store

The long-awaited Slingbox Slingplayer application for the iPhone has been submitted to the Apple’s AppStore, according to Slingbox’s website.  Applied Gadgetry won’t be able to resist temptation and put  up the new player head to head with our current Hava/Orb setup.  It’s not exactly a fair comparison, but it will have to do until Hava can get their native player out as well - hopefully for the end of the second quarter.

The big question about the Slingbox app other than the normal interface, streaming quality, and overall responsiveness - how much is this thing going to cost

TV on iPhone

  1. A PC (Vista, XP Service Pack 2, or XP Media Center Edition) with a TV Tuner installed. I’ll use a Hava Platinum HD Media Streamer as a “wireless” TV Tuner.
  2. Orb installed on a PC (free, link)
  3. OrbLive installed on your iPhone ($9.99, link opens AppStore)

Native Hava player coming to iPhone

At CES, Hava released a shava_logo1tatement saying that they will release a native iPhone application to enable users to stream their TV goodness directly to their iPhone.  Likely a direct response to SlingMedia’s recent announcements, it gears up iPhone users who want several streaming options for a choice.  Until then, you can use Hava combined with Orb for a nice stopgap solution.
