Won’t someone trick my 3GS so I can Sling over 3G? UPDATE: Someone did!
UPDATE: crash-x has release 3G Unrestrictor to allow wi-fi only apps to run over the 3G network. Read more here.
So I now have my shiny 3GS safely jailbroken using the Iphone Dev Team’s latest tools, and happily running Intelliscreen and Elert, along with my other favorite JB apps like SBSettings. But I am missing one of the best hacks from the the OS 2.0 days…Tricker ThreeG and VoipOver3G to allow SlingPlayer on my iPhone 3GS.
If you’ve ready the other articles on this blog, you’ll see I had to be among the first to get the SlingPlayer app for the iPhone and promptly use VoipOver3G to allow me to stream over the 3G network. That worked flawlessly, but now I hear gossip about possible application theft - is Tricker ThreeG just VoipOver3G with a donation link, or just gone from Cydia to get retooled for the 3GS? (Read here and here for slightly more information).
Someone will figure this out soon - until then, I’m still pretty happy playing with all of the other new 3.0 apps.

Just got an email response from Jay Freeman(Saurik), really nice guy. I asked him if there was a hardware issue refusing programmers to create a program to trick the Iphone to believe it’s on WIFI but really on 3g. He writes,
” There will be a new version of voipover3g from the developer that works on the 3GS soon. He’s just being a little slow, partly because he’s also spent the time to write a GUI for it, which he is going to launch at the same time and sell (voipover3g will still be free). -J”

I was VERY disappointed in the failure of 3G use for Slingbox, this “Unrestrictor” app, adding insult to injury costs about $3. It comes with a flyer stating that several users have had problems with this app with the slingbox, check INFO…. what good does that do any user? The buyer is the only one being TRICKED.

I wish I could write like you as Margaret Laurence once said “When I say “work” I only mean writing. Everything else is just odd jobs.”
