Get SlingPlayer for iPhone working on 3G!

May 12th, 2009

UPDATE 2: This no longer works on OS 3.0, specifically with an iPhone 3GS.  Read more below in the comments in this article, and this post.

UPDATE: As reader John Michael points out in the comments below, Jordan Clark has released Tricker ThreeG in Cydia, which is an alternative to using VoIPover3G for those who don’t wish to modify the VoIPover3G file.  Tricker ThreeG is a nice one step solution to get SlingPlayer working on 3G.  (Thanks John and Jordan!)

Jailbreakers rejoice!  SlingPlayer works over 3G using VoIPover3G!  Read on for our first impressions of the app and how quickly you realize that 3G is a must for this app.

First impressions:

Wow, it’s just as easy to spend $29.99 as it is $.99.  I wonder if the people who bought the “I am Rich” app for $999.99 felt like this.

Installed easily enough, and found my SlingBox by simply using my regular Sling email/password.  The interface is indeed quite nice, reponse is a bit sluggish, but many times better than my Orb setup.

WiFi only is simply unacceptable.  Out on the deck, the WiFi was spotty and lost connection.  Must fix.

Installed VoIPover3G from Cydia.  Tried to SSH insto my phone to find out what the SlingPlayer bundle indentifier is.  Realized I didn’t have SSH installed yet (since my last OS update).  Threw in Boss Prefs for good measure.

After SSH’ing using WinSCP and following this guide, I found that the bundle identifier is “com.slingmedia.SlingPlayer”.  Added that to “/Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plist”.

Did a soft restart, then disabled WiFi to see if SlingPlayer will start up….SUCCESS!

Watched the last few minutes of a Dane Cook special on Comedy Central - seemed to work just about as well as when WiFi is enabled.  Admittedly, a very early observation.

That’s all for now - glad to see that this will work over 3G with VoIPover3G.

Im sure this will probably work. I have mixed feelings about VoIPover3G. I have not yet tried it for Slingplayer yet because I haven’t had the chance, but I will this weekend. I wish there was an easier way to change what programs are used by the VoIPover3g plist. Its really not that hard to use SSH to do it but many people don’t know what they’re doing. Someone needs to incorporate a toggle in BossPrefs to choose which programs are used by VoIPover3g. If anyone has the means to make this happen, I would gladly donate $$$ for your time.

    Hi John Michael,
I added the “com.slingmedia.SkingPlayer” to the list but what else do I need to do in order to add that to the iphone? seems like it never gets registered. I did a reboot and the old list comes back without slingplayer added. I try to do a ^X but it won’t exit?? I am new to this. Please help. Thanks.

Allen, if you’re having trouble with VoIPover3G try using “Tricker ThreeG.” You can find it in Cydia. You don’t have to edit any plist cause Tricker ThreeG already has it included for Slingplayer. If you have any other questions, let me know.

I have seen this error with other programs in the past and I have yet to figure out what to do to fix it. What I would do is download Apt Backup so you can easily store/restore all of your Cydia programs with one button after you re-jailbreak your phone. Re-jailbreaking shouldn’t take more than an hour and you should be able to use Tricker ThreeG. Or you could always just try using VoIPover3g and adding the SlingBox to the plist. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I have isntalled Tricker ThreeG and I no longer get the “only works on Wifi” error, but after it goes thru the login, connecting…. it pops up a message saying “your phone or slingplayer may not be connected to the internet” I can however access my Slingbox via PDAnet on my laptop so it’s clearly setup for internet useage.

    Any idea’s? Thanks.

I’ll ask the obvious first - did you reboot your iPhone? I haven’t installed Tricker ThreeG myself…still using VOIPover3G, so I can’t vouch for what may be going on. Have you gotten it to work using just WiFi yet? Perhaps your SlingPlayer isn’t configured properly.

Jordan, I would first ask what the admin asks JD…”Can you connect to the slingbox on wifi first?” It very well could be a problem with your slingbox settings when you are outside of you local network. Try taking your laptop to a friends and connect with your phone or laptop on their wifi. I don’t think that there is a problem with the program. Everyone I know that has used it has had it work with much success. Let me know.

I have the same problem, it’s really frustrating because it used to work until I had to restore and re jailbreak my iPhone the other day. Since re installing everything including tricker3G slingplayer won’t work over 3G I just get the message saying to check the connection. Works fine over wi fi any help would be great

Jordan(the creator of Tricker3G) tried to get donations for his program and people bashed him on modmyiphone.com forums so he took it off of Cydia. There have been some thoughts that he took it off so that he could get it to work with the 3G S but I have to think the first reason is what happened. If you get a chance, you should email him and ask for his program. Say you’ll donate $5. Otherwise look around on the net for Tricker3g and install it via SSH. I know you may be new to this but look around for SSH instructions and guides. There are plenty out there. The more time you spend, the more comfortable you will get.

Thanks for the input, John Michael. It’s too bad Jordan was bashed for asking for donations - people expect even more for free these days since the App Store came along and offered so many free and $.99 apps. Now that I have a 3GS, I’m hoping a solution will come along soon.
